Three days and counting... The MUCH MUCH anticipated film adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's Twilight (2005) about two star-crossed lovers with one being a potential midnight snack for the other, will be @ the movies on November 21, 2008. It's going to be way too much fun to go alone. Send out some evites and check out the Twilight party kit.

John Boyne's The Boy in the Striped Pajamas : a fable (2006) is set during World War II. Seen through the innocent eyes of Bruno, the eight-year-old son of the commandant at a concentration camp, his forbidden friendship with a Jewish boy on the other side of the camp fence is at once powerful and moving. Find out more about the book and the film.

Revolutionary Road is based on Richard Yates' "deft, ironic, beautiful" novel (1961). Frank and April Wheeler are a young couple trying to find fulfillment in an era of conformity. Trapped in a world of encoded convention, they dream without faith, as lies and self-deceptions build to explosive consequences. This Hollywood adaptation reunites the cast of The Titanic.

The Great American Nerdfighter Tour with John and Hank Green

john green

Join the Ann Arbor District Library in welcoming John and Hank Green on Friday, November 14th, to the Downtown Library at 7 PM.

The brothers are the founders of Nerdfighters—“ We're Nerdfighters. We fight against suck....we fight for awesome. We fight using our brains, our hearts, our calculators and our trombones.” Hank and John communicated for more than a year and a half through videoblogs, and thus became vlogbrothers. What began as an experiment in bringing long-distance siblings closer has become a sprawling community devoted to books, social activism, and the love of all things nerdy.

John Green is best known for his award winning writing. He is a YA novelist and has won the 2006 Michael L. Printz Award for Looking for Alaska, and a 2007 Printz Honor for An Abundance of Katherines. His newest book is Paper Towns.

Getting Your High School Musical Fix

Are you or your children fans of the High School Musical franchise? The third movie is in theatres now, not to be released on DVD until sometime in the spring of 2009, but AADL has both Disney channel versions. High School Musical the original and High School Musical 2 are both rated G and though made for the tween audience, are engaging enough for parents to enjoy.

Another movie similar in spirit to HSM is the 2007 musical Hairspray, based on the Tony-award-winning Broadway stage musical (itself based on the 1988 John Waters' directed Hairspray). Set in 1967, it tells the story of teenager Tracy Turnblad as she tries to broaden the minds of her peers in racially volatile Baltimore. Much of the movie takes place on an after-school dancing television show, and features HSM's Zac Efron in a starring role. John Travolta is almost unrecognizable as Tracy's mother. The movie is rated PG.

Paper Towns - John Green's Newest!

john green

Radar, Ben and Quentin are buddies. The kind that will drop everything and go on a road trip to search for the elusive Margo. When she turns up missing, the friends plot and plan to uncover her whereabouts. This is the plot of John Green's latest novel, Paper Towns.

I'd like to create a soundtrack for this story, and I'd start with having the new single by the Pretenders play as the minivan drives north from Orlando. A Billy Bragg tune is recommended and also the Mountain Goats. Feel free to suggest other tunes for a playlist.

John Green will be at AADL on November 14, with his brother Hank. Mark your calendars!
